Spicy Mustard Prawns

  • 6 large (150-200g) green prawns,
  • ½ teaspoon Sambal Oelek (chilli paste)
  • 1 teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 1 tablespoon grated onion
  • ½ teaspoon grated garlic
  • ½ teaspoon ground cumin 
  • pinch turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar
  • ¼ cup of water
  • 1 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2-3 dried curried leaves
  • Wedge of lemon
  • A sprig of dill for garnish *optional


  • Peel and devein prawns, leaving tails on
  • Heat oil in a pan, add onions and garlic, stir and cook for 1-2 minutes
  • Add mustard seeds and chilli paste, stir and cook for another minute
  • Add cumin, turmeric, sugar, water and lemon juice to the pan
  • Bring to the boil and reduce heat, simmer until sauce reduces and thickens slightly
  • Add prawns and curry leaves, cook for 4-6 minutes turning the prawns to cook evenly
  • Arrange prawns on a serving plate with a wedge of lemon on the side 
  • Drizzle any remaining sauce over the prawns and sprigs of *optional dill on top 
  • Serve and Enjoy!
